Use Case

Government & Smart City

Public services, digital identity, and city infrastructure whose data can be verified.

Scope

This page describes the scope of the technology in use. The status of each product and initiative can be seen on the Ecosystem.

Problem

How things stand today.

Data and documents in public services are usually spread across systems that are not connected, so proving authenticity still depends on a manual process.

Current Challenges

  • The same data is stored repeatedly in different systems.
  • Verifying public documents requires a multi-step process.
  • The history of data changes is hard to trace.
  • Citizens have no independent way to check whether a document is genuine.

Engine Solution

What we build.

Engine Blockchain provides the infrastructure to record proof of documents and service events on a ledger, while operational data stays within the agency’s own systems. Smart City is an ecosystem initiative heading in this direction and is still under development.

Blockchain Architecture

The layers behind this use case.

Field data arrives through the application, is verified by a smart contract, and is then recorded permanently on the Engine Blockchain ledger.

Workflow

The process from end to end.

  1. 01

The agency issues a document through its service application.

  2. 02

The document’s digital fingerprint is recorded on the ledger.

  3. 03

Citizens receive the document along with its verification reference.

  4. 04

Third parties check the document through that reference.

Objectives

What this use case aims for.

The list below sets out the objectives, not results that have been measured.

  • A document’s authenticity can be checked without opening its contents.
  • The history of data changes is recorded on the ledger.
  • Less need for repeated legalisation steps.
  • The service process becomes more open to inspection.
